In 1921 Shibata Works, the predecessor of HARIO Co., Ltd., was
founded in Kanda-Sudacho, Tokyo, and started production and sales of
laboratory glassware.
In addition to manufacturing beakers, flasks,
petri dishes, and coolers with the logo of Hiromu, Shibata Works
embarked in research on glass melting, and succeeded in melting “HARIO
Glass,” a glass of 1st-grade hardness.
1960's
HARIO also entered the area of glass tableware, and wondered if we could make a fuss-free dripper that produces flavor close to cloth-filtered coffee, which was said to be classic-style coffee, through utilizing the heat-resistant glass technology we had accumulated. During the trial and error process, we tried to drip coffee with cone-shaped funnels for laboratory use that were in the glass test room of the company. In 1980 HARIO launched a paper dripper that extracted coffee by slightly floating the paper like cloth, but regrettably it did not spread.
2004
Twenty-four years later, HARIO started the development project again. Usually, ribs of the dripper extended straight vertically. This caused the paper to closely adhere to the dripper wall between neighboring ribs, making it difficult to let the air through. We noticed that it decreased the efficiency of extraction. To make a path for the air by floating the paper, we added a twist to the rib shape, and also made a single large hole in the bottom. This gave a birth to a dripper which prevents hot water from staying too long in it, and enables users to control the speed of pouring water to brew coffee to their desired taste ? a lighter taste if water is poured quickly, and a stronger and deeper flavor if poured slowly.
2018
HARIO received Japan’s Good Design Award in 2007 for the V60 made from plastic and ceramic that had been completed by that time. Since a brewer who used the V60 won first prize in the 2010 World Brewers Cup, the V60 has spread around the world through word of mouth. Today, the V60 is used by many baristas and coffee enthusiasts in world coffee competitions or cafes as the dripper with which they can directly express coffee taste.
